The Castle

Castelnuovo is known for its castle, once the capital of the bishop of Luni domain. The building dates from the twelfth century, built by Bishop Walter to control the Francigena and then completed by Henry Fucecchio, commissioner of the Code Pelavicino. Today there are impressive remains with traces of walls, sections of the castle wall and a tower of 80 meters with a rectangular plan.

On October 6, 1306 Dante Alighieri as prosecutor of Francesco Malaspina signed in this castle a famous peace  with the Bishop of Luni, Antonio Nuvolone da Camilla.. Every year, in August, in piazza Querciola, there is a parade with medieval costumes that remembers this historic event
